Reposing at Mona Mc Cormack’s residence today, Friday, from 2pm until 9pm. Removal tomorrow, Saturday morning, to arrive at St Ultan’s Church, Killinkere for Funeral Mass at 11 o clock with burial afterwards in St Anne’s Cemetery, Bailieborough. House private Saturday morning please.
No Through Road:
The new Traffic Barrier on the Galbolie Road side of St. Anne’s Church is now in operation. This will leave the area around the Church safer for pedestrians and visitors as traffic ignoring the signs and using the Avenue as a short-cut had increased steadily in recent years. Some of these cars drove across the front of the Church at high speed and there were a number of incidents, where people leaving the Church were almost knocked down. Students making their way from school were also at risk from passing traffic. The barriers will be open for all Funerals, weekend and Holy Day Masses. All Church users are reminded to use the designated parking spaces only and not to park in the unmarked areas of the Avenue.

Calling all past students, from those recently finished to those who were there at the beginning, we are inviting you to join our Senior Band for a few tunes on February 25th in the Helix.

Moybologue Historical Society:
A draft for a numbered mapboard for Moybologue New Cemetery will be on display in the porch of St. Patrick’s Church, Tierworker, this week. Relatives are asked to check the mapboard and to fill in any errors or changes on the sheets available in the porch and we will have the final version updated.

It is planned that the mapboard will be updated every 3 to 5 years depending on the numbers of new burials.
The group plan to erect a similar style mapboard at Moybologue Old Graveyard in the Spring, and are seeking financial donations to enable this project to go ahead. Also, this is the final call for anyone with knowledge of unmarked burials and unmarked burial locations in the old graveyard, who has not already been in contact with us, to please contact any member of the committee or email moybologuehs@gmail.com so the details can be recorded and marked. The Gallery Press had a Full House to celebrate the publication of the book which was launched by poet and publisher, Peter Fallon, with an address by Paddy McDonald, Cathaoirleach, Cavan Co Council on Thursday evening last in Bailieborough Library.
Padraic McIntyre is a native of Bailieborough, where he lives with his family. He trained as an actor at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff and has an MA in Theatre Studies from DCU.
Between 2004 and 2017, as Artistic Director of Livin’ Dred Theatre Company, he directed twenty-two productions. He has worked as an actor throughout the UK and Ireland on both stage and screen. Writing credits include The Little Dance Girl, Carnival at Glenaduff, A Holy Show, The King of Ireland’s Son, The Lost Weekend, The Hero of the Half Acre and Cuckoo Connolly’s
Curious Clock Shop.
He was recently appointed Theatre Manager at The Ramor Theatre, Virginia, County Cavan.
Thanks to all who came to support Padraic, to Paddy McDonald, Cathaoirleach, Cavan County Council, to Peter Fallon of Gallery Press and to Padraic himself, who spoke with such passion about the play, his home town, the cast, and first and foremost, his family!! Regretted Death:
The death has occurred in England of Nora Pickin, nee Love—daughter of the late Jack and Elsie Love, Stonewall, Bailieborough—on Friday, 25th January, 2018. Nora was a sister of the recently deceased Robert Love, Anne St. Nora will be sadly missed by her sister Sylvia in Dublin, her son Andrew, her daughter in law, Beverley, grandson Dara, granddaughter Karla and her 3 great grandchildren and many friends. Nora’s Funeral will be taking place in Bingham, Nottinghamshire, England on Monday, February 12th.

Native Talk are a fresh new Irish band ready to take the scene by storm. Hailing from Carrickmacross Co. Monaghan, this four piece band have some great music to showcase!

Their debut single “Hangover” was well received and, along with their latest single “Makes Me Stay” and with plans to release and EP in 2018, they could be ones to watch this year.

Grainne Hunt: Originally from Carrickmacross, Grainne’s Irish roots are subtly and beautifully etched in the melodies she writes.
2017 was an extremely busy year for Grainne, which included solo gigs on the West Coast of the US, Berlin, Cologne, Dusseldorf, London, a headline slot at Schottenfest, Vienna, a special guest slot with choir Cantus Domus at Kaltern Fest, Italy, a sold out show at Rathfarnham Castle and the awarding of an Arts Council Travel and Training Grant.
Alongside this she toured extensively with Mark Geary in Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and the US in support of his new album.
Back to Ireland now, she is continuing to work on new material for her second release, due in mid/late 2018.

The Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the town will take place on Saturday, 17th March. This year there will be €1,500 in prizes, prizes for best club, comedy, business, and window display. Weekday Masses during Lent:
The season of Lent begins today, Wednesday, February 14th. The Parish Pastoral Council decided to have two early Masses each week during the season at 8.00am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Masses on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays will be at the normal times.
Stations of the Cross: The Stations of the Cross will take place during Lent immediately after the 7.00pm Mass on Friday, 16th February, 23rd February, 2nd March, 9th March, 16th March and 23rd March.

Birdwatch Ireland is hosting a training session for surveying in Cavan. If you feel that it is something you might like to get involved in, please read the information and follow the link below to register.
The session is a joint CBS/I-WeBS training day. Its aim is to try and recruit some new survey participants and also to give existing surveyors a chance to come along and share experiences.
24th March (Sat): Farnham Arms Hotel, Cavan.
Both these surveys are long-term projects and very important tools for monitoring how our breeding birds and wetland sites are faring. As a certain level of identification skill is required to carry out the two surveys (and for CBS you would need to be pretty familiar with songs and calls of a good range of our common and widespread species) we suggest you have a look at these two lists below:
CBS list: (by sight & sound): Mistle Thrush, Blackcap, Redpoll, Willow Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Reed Bunting, Dunnock, Treecreeper. And by sight only: Merlin and Whinchat.
I-WeBS list: (by sight only): Wigeon, Teal, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, Pochard, Knot, Dunlin, Bar-tailed Godwit, Black-tailed Godwit, Greenland White-fronted Goose.
If you could readily identify a minimum of 7 of these CBS or I-WeBS species in the field, then you should be OK. If you have trouble with them, then perhaps these sessions (and these surveys) will be a bit too advanced for you.
The Countryside Bird Survey (CBS) is carried out between 1st April and 30th June. It involves two early morning walks to count birds in a 1km square – the work is done by 9 AM!
The Irish Wetland Bird Survey (I-WeBS) is carried out from September to March. Estuaries, lakes, marshes and other wetlands across the country are counted once a month during the autumn, winter and early spring.
Each session will have the same format, starting at 10.00hrs with an entertaining slide show explaining how and why we do these surveys and there will be lots of tips on identification. After lunch (provided), we will have a short outdoor field trip to give you a chance to put theory into practice. We will be finished around 15.30hrs. The sessions are very relaxed and easy going, but also, we hope, informative. All instruction, tea, coffee, biscuits and lunch are free.

‘Honda Run’:
A motorcycle run will take place on Sunday, March 18th in aid of raising funds for ‘The Family Comfort Room’ in St. James’s Hospital, Dublin. This run is in memory of the late, Niamh Crosby, Curkish, Bailieborough. Registration will take place from 10.00am to 12 noon, with a 12.15pm start at Enagh House (located approx. 2kms from Virginia on the Virginia—Bailieborough Road). Weekday Masses during Lent:
The Parish Pastoral Council decided to have two early Masses each week during Lent at 8.00am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Masses on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays will be at the normal times.
Stations of the Cross: The Stations of the Cross will take place during Lent immediately after the 7.00pm Mass on Friday, 23rd February, 2nd March, 9th March, 16th March and 23rd March.
5K Walk/Run:
A 5K Walk/Run will take place on Sunday, March 4th at 12 noon, commencing at the Community Centre, Chapel Road in Bailieborough. Funds raised will help Aisling Claffey towards her participation in an organised trip to Sri Lanka—where Aisling will volunteer in Mental Health Services for four weeks. Birdwatch Ireland is hosting a training session for surveying in Cavan. If you feel that it is something you might like to get involved in, please read the information and follow the link below to register.
The session is a joint CBS/I-WeBS training day. Its aim is to try and recruit some new survey participants and also to give existing surveyors a chance to come along and share experiences.

Both these surveys are long-term projects and very important tools for monitoring how our breeding birds and wetland sites are faring. As a certain level of identification skill is required to carry out the two surveys (and for CBS you would need to be pretty familiar with songs and calls of a good range of our common and widespread species) we suggest you have a look at these two lists below:
CBS list: (by sight & sound): Mistle Thrush, Blackcap, Redpoll, Willow Warbler, Sedge Warbler, Reed Bunting, Dunnock, Treecreeper. And by sight only: Merlin and Whinchat.
I-WeBS list: (by sight only): Wigeon, Teal, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, Pochard, Knot, Dunlin, Bar-tailed Godwit, Black-tailed Godwit, Greenland White-fronted Goose.
If you could readily identify a minimum of 7 of these CBS or I-WeBS species in the field, then you should be OK. If you have trouble with them, then perhaps these sessions (and these surveys) will be a bit too advanced for you.
The Countryside Bird Survey (CBS) is carried out between 1st April and 30th June. It involves two early morning walks to count birds in a 1km square – the work is done by 9 AM!
The Irish Wetland Bird Survey (I-WeBS) is carried out from September to March. Estuaries, lakes, marshes and other wetlands across the country are counted once a month during the autumn, winter and early spring.
Each session will have the same format, starting at 10.00hrs with an entertaining slide show explaining how and why we do these surveys and there will be lots of tips on identification. After lunch (provided), we will have a short outdoor field trip to give you a chance to put theory into practice. We will be finished around 15.30hrs. The sessions are very relaxed and easy going, but also, we hope, informative. All instruction, tea, coffee, biscuits and lunch are free.

Tommie Carolan, Corravilla and late Tunnyduff, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, died 22nd Feb. 2018, in his 99th year, peacefully at the Sacred Heart Nursing Home, Clones. Deeply regretted by his nephews, nieces, sisters-in-law, relatives and friends.
Storm Emma and ‘The Beast from the East’:
During the past week, both of the aforementioned events had an effect on the people living in the town and surrounding areas. From Tuesday of last week, biting cold temperatures were the norm and local shops and supermarkets were quickly sold out of basic foodstuffs. Snow fell on Tuesday night and continued to fall over the next few days with varying degrees of intensity. The local County Council crews were out gritting and salting the main roads around the town which helped traffic to keep moving. The worst of the snow fell on Thursday and Friday and most people heeded the warnings to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Some shops were open for a few hours on Friday afternoon but most stayed closed along with all the local schools. By Saturday morning, Main St. was passable, mainly due to the hard work of the council crews, shop owners and employees and the help of the local farming community and machinery operators who used their machinery to clear the main roads around the town. Most businesses were open for trade and by late Saturday evening, most people were able to replenish their larders with stocks of fresh food. On Sunday, a slight thaw set in but some religious services were cancelled or postponed due to the weather—most notably the Confirmation of local schoolchildren due to be held in St. Annes and which is rescheduled for Sunday next. Most other social events were either cancelled or deferred to a later date along with most sporting activities. At the time of writing (Monday morning), all the main roads are clear into the town and the thaw has well and truly set in, but there still remains a lot of snow on outlying roads and lanes which will take some time to remove.
So, hopefully, the worst storm over the past few years has now gone and life will be able to get back to normal for all the people of Bailieborough and its hinterland.
Confirmation:
Unfortunately, due to health and safety concerns Confirmation was postponed in Bailieborough on Sunday last. Because of the ongoing adverse weather conditions, the poor and impassable state of roads in many parts of the parish and the icy conditions around the church carpark/avenues Fr. Router had no option but to make this decision.
Confirmation is rescheduled for next weekend on Sunday, March 11th, at 3pm. Bishop Leo will not be able to attend as he has a full schedule of confirmations in other parishes until the end of May. Monsignor Liam Kelly, Vicar General of Kilmore Diocese, has agreed to administer confirmation.

The annual Women’s World Day of Prayer Service will this year be held in Trinity Church, Virginia Road on Friday, March 9th at 8.00pm (re-arranged due to the bad weather last Friday). Deepest Sympathy is extended to the nephews, nieces, sisters-in-law, relatives and friends of Tommie Carolan, Corravilla and late Tunnyduff, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan, who passed away on Thursday, February 22nd, in his 99th year, peacefully at the Sacred Heart Nursing Home, Clones. Tommie’s Funeral Mass took place in St. Bridgid’s Church, Knockbride West on Saturday, February 24th with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
The Open Door Sessions:
This month’s ‘Open Door Sessions’ will take place on Friday, March 16th, Downstairs at Nixy’s, The Square Bar, commencing at 9.00pm. This month’s arts and music gathering features comedian/poet Dave Hynes, Dublin indie-folk band Pine the Pilcrow and traditional musician Sharon Argue. We’re sure to be in for a great night’s entertainment. All welcome.

‘Honda Run’:
A motorcycle run will take place on Sunday, March 18th in aid of raising funds for ‘The Family Comfort Room’ in St. James’s Hospital, Dublin. This run is in memory of the late, Niamh Crosby, Curkish, Bailieborough. Registration will take place from 10.00am to 12 noon, with a 12.15pm start at Enagh House (located approx. 2kms from Virginia on the Virginia—Bailieborough Road). The run distance is 55miles and the entry fee is €20. All bikes are welcome and light refreshments will be served before and after. St. Patrick’s Day Parade:
The Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the town will take place on Saturday, 17th March. The Parade will commence at 2.00pm. This year there will be €1,500 in prizes, prizes for best club, comedy, business, and window display. In an effort to invigorate the parade in our town, we are looking for more help and ideas from you all, we are proposing a special category for clubs in the area with a prize of €500 for best club float or pageant. We’d really appreciate all businesses big or small to put in a float (all entered free). Any ideas please get in touch with any committee member. East Cavan Gaels GAA Club – Hurling News 5th March 2018
The Beast from the East didn’t stop the McGuigans from Stradone building their own hurler! Full back?
Child protection; Thanks to all club members who recently completed their child protection course given in the Bailie Hotel by Cavan GAA. Along with Garda vetting and GAA coaching award it ensures all our coaches/mentors/managers have all the requirements to be involved in hurling for the year ahead.
Saint Patricks Day Parades; This year, for the very first time, we will partake in two parades, in Bailieborough, and for the first time, in Kingscourt. We hope as many of our young hurlers will participate. The float is under construction in a secret location.
Monday hurling; Most hurling fixtures for 2018, be that Ulster GAA, Monaghan and Cavan GAA will be scheduled for Mondays. Nine counties are beginning to use Monday as their hurling fixtures day this year, which is a big step forward for hurling development. We expect all our players ages from U11 upwards to be available to us going forward. There will be no Gaelic football fixtures on Monday, as like last year, so we hope many more Gaels who have not had the opportunity to play hurling will now take this chance as there should be no reason not to as Monday will be free from other GAA activity. The dual GAA star is still out there, join us.
Under 6/8/10; Training indoors away from the elements in Kingscourt on Thursday and Bailieborough on Friday. Registration forms will be given out this week with registration Thursday 15th March in Kingscourt and Friday 16th March in Bailieborough.
